Critical Frequency Design Successfully Demonstrates Advanced Free Space Optics Technology at Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division Silent Swarm 2024

Melbourne, Fla. (October 21, 2024) – Critical Frequency Design (CFD), an emerging aerospace and defense photonics technology company based in Melbourne, Florida, announced the successful demonstration of its Free Space Optics (FSO) communications solution as part of the Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division Silent Swarm 2024 Exercise. Silent Swarm is a series of events that focuses on experimenting and demonstrating technologies for electromagnetic spectrum operations.

The event marked the first ever demonstration of laser communications at Silent Swarm and the first time CFD’s FSO communication solution had been integrated with a ground-based autonomous platform, which showcased the versatility and adaptability of the solution. CFD’s solution successfully transmitted high-bandwidth information at the halt while being jammed, proving its resiliency to operate in a denied environment, CFD’s FSO communication system was able to align and acquire the target receiver and achieved communication with no data loss and low latency, highlighting significant improvements in performance.

“We are thrilled to have successfully demonstrated our Free Space Optics technology at Silent Swarm 2024,” said Rebecca Warren, CEO of Critical Frequency Design. “This achievement highlights our team’s hard work and dedication to advancing photonics technology, and it reinforces our commitment to delivering cutting-edge solutions that enhance the effectiveness and security of military operations.”

FSO technology is important because it leverages light that propagates in free space to transmit data wirelessly. This enables extremely high data transmission rates, which are essential for real time communication and data sharing. It also provides secure communication, as lightbased communication is difficult to detect and intercept, providing a secure link ideal for sensitive military operations.

Furthermore, the FSO technology developed by CFD leverages advanced photonic technologies to enable rapid alignment and acquisition during transit and in high-vibration environments. It also has lower size, weight, and power (SWaP) requirements, making it suitable for a wider variety of platforms.

Critical Frequency Design (CFD) provides advanced photonics communications and sensing solutions for warfighters in contested environments. Led by an agile, innovative team of experts across engineering, manufacturing, supply chain and program management, CFD possesses the knowledge and expertise to rapidly deliver mission-critical solutions to the warfighter.
